Curaçao - A Photo Kit... is the happy photographic marriage of the wonderful Caribbean Island of Curaçao and the equally wonderful Children's novel written by Theodore Taylor "The Cay". Both are exceptional.
Hopefully the book will make reading this wonderful novel even more enjoyable and exciting. It should be a useful teaching aid that will be attractive to students and useful to teachers and parents. It should also please the many who like the island of Curaçao or would like to prepare a visit or even dream of one.
In 1969 Theodore Taylor took only three weeks to write a delightful book. It is a masterpiece of children’s literature. “The Cay” became a best seller. It won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award as being worthy of being on the same shelf as “Alice in Wonderland”. It won numerous other awards and was named the New York Times Best Book of the Year.
It is very suitable for children aged 10 or older. Often, teachers include it in grade 5 or grade 6 reading material.
The book is set in World War II. It is about a boy whose ship is sunk by a torpedo. The boy, Phillip is stranded on a desert island with an old Antillean sailor, Timothy. He is blinded during the event but is subtly taught how to cope and survive by the old sailor. The adventure is fast paced as the boy learns self-reliance and overcomes his racial prejudices.
The first two chapters are set on the beautiful Caribbean island of Curaçao.
Curaçao - The Photo Kit to Illustrate the Children's Novel "The Cay" by Theodore Taylor offers 63 colourful photographs taken in Curaçao. Some are underwater pictures of sea life. Each picture is linked to the novel through a simple but informative caption. The photographs should lead to a greater appreciation of the interestingly beautiful island of Curaçao.
